What My Dog Taught Me About Stepping Into the Unknown

Happy Tuesday to you!

Have you ever stood on the edge of something new—excited but also a little unsure? That’s exactly what I was reminded of when I took my 2-year-old lab to the river dog park for the first time.

She LOVES water, and when I let her out of the car, she was beside herself—whining, pulling, barking in excitement. I think she could smell the water. But the moment I unleashed her, she bolted straight in—no hesitation, just pure joy.

It made me think about how we approach new things. When we step outside our comfort zone, our brain often goes on high alert—overthinking, freezing, or wanting to retreat.

But just like my dog knew she was made for the water, you are made for more than staying in your comfort zone. Our brain always wants to keep us safe and pull us back into our comfort zone—that’s its job. We get to teach our brains that we are safe as we venture outside of our “norm.”

How to Move Forward Without Shutting Down:

Recognize the fear – It’s normal! Naming it takes away some of its power.
Take a small step – You don’t have to dive in all at once. Make one small shift in the direction you want to go.
Find support – Encouragement makes all the difference. Find someone you trust to be a support for you… a friend, family member, or a coach

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
